Financial planner
What can a financial planner do for me?
A financial planner is normally a qualified independent financial adviser who works with you using a structured financial planning process in order to help and coach you to achieve your life goals and ambitions. If you don’t understand the financial planning process, please read the linked financial planning page.
What’s the difference between a financial planner and a financial adviser?
Basically the methods used to help you with your finances. A financial planner starts with a full overview of what you want from life and produces a financial plan to help you meet those objectives. This is usually carried out on a fee basis.
Once you have agreed the overall plan you need to decide which parts to implement and this is when a financial planner “swaps hats” to become an independent financial adviser and advise you on the most suitable financial products to meet your need as agreed in your financial plan.
What if I don’t wish to pay a financial planner for a financial plan?
If for whatever reason you decide you do not wish to instruct your planner to produce a financial plan but merely require advice on a limited area such as pensions advice, investment advice, estate planning or inheritance tax a planner may agree to go straight to the financial advice part of their role.
However many financial planners will now no longer work for you purely in a financial adviser role as they believe this method is not in your best long term interest.
My own views are that as long as you have understood why we always strongly recommend the financial planning route as our default method of working, then it’s up to you to decide if you don’t want a financial plan.
As I am fifty plus, surely it’s too late to use a financial planner?
Absolutely not. Even if you belong to the millionaire asset group and are fifty plus now, you may live well into your 80s or 90s and making sure you never run out of money while still maintaining your desired lifestyle makes working with a financial planner even more important today. The main thing is peace of mind knowing that you and your financial planner are paying proper attention to your finances.
