Set SMART goals
What are SMART goals?
SMART is an acronym for the following:
Specific. Be as specific as possible the more accurately you define your goal the more achievable it will become. Write down all statements in the positive i.e. what you aim to be or happen and not a negative statement. For example, “I want to lose weight”, is not good enough. It should be, “I want to weigh 11 stone and 7 lbs.”
Measurable. The result can be measured as opposed to being subjective.
Acceptable to all parties concerned.
Realistic. Within the availability of your resources, knowledge and time. However do push those boundaries
Time driven – Goals without deadlines are just wishes: they lack the power of commitment. Set a specific date for completion of the goal. Have balance between courage and consideration when choosing a date.-not too long or too short. Once established write it down.
Why spend time on defining the reasons behind your SMART goals?
What makes one thought more powerful than another is the emotion attached to it! All thoughts are equal until emotion is added.
Emotion gives a thought its impact and acts as the fuel for motivation. We are never motivated by logic, but always by emotion. So, what are your emotional reasons for achieving your goals? Search your feelings for the most compelling reasons, and once you have them, write them down.
Why can’t I do all this myself – why do I need help from a financial planner?
These are the main reasons why you may fail on life planning:
- you are just too busy to take time out to plan your life properly
- you lack sufficient knowledge of the best ways to go about this
- you start and lack the motivation to continue
Once you recognise all of the above there is nothing like paying for a service to ensure you actually do it. We help our millionaire clients by using regular goal reviews to coach them to achieve their goals. Roger Federer may be one of the world’s best tennis players but you can bet he still pays for a coach to help him achieve his best.
